What do extractions cost?

When you come in for an appointment, our dentist tell you your total tooth extraction cost after performing an examination. Factors he or she will look at include whether a dental extraction is possible, whether you'll need a follow up appointment and the location of the tooth. Your dental insurance coverage will also affect your total cost.

How is a surgical extraction different from a dental extraction?

General dentists do straightforward extractions with a local anesthetic when they can grasp the tooth, loosen it and pull it out. If the tooth is impacted or broken off, an oral surgeon will make an incision in the gum to access the tooth and remove it. You may have a stitch after a surgical extraction, but not with a dental, or simple, extraction.

When would a dentist have no choice other than an extraction?

Typically, dentists have no choice other than to perform an extraction if you have a tooth with such extensive decay that a root canal isn't feasible. Additionally, if your tooth, including the root, is severely fractured or you have advanced periodontal disease and you have teeth that are loose from bone loss.

If I have a damaged or decayed tooth, will a dentist pull it?

If you have a fractured, broken or badly decayed tooth, our dentist will try to save the tooth with a filling, root canal or crown. If the damage has reached the root, it might not be possible to preserve the tooth, so our dentist will suggest having the tooth pulled. What is a baby tooth extraction?

Our dentist may recommend pulling one of your child's teeth if the tooth is badly decayed or infected to stop the pain and prevent the infection from spreading. Will I have teeth extractions with periodontal disease?

If you have advanced periodontal disease, it may destroy the bone holding your tooth in place. If this occurs, the tooth can become loose and hurt as it moves in your mouth. Our dentist can extract any loose teeth to relieve the pain.

Why do dentists recommend pulling wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, frequently cause problems for many young adults because their jaw isn't large enough for them. A dentist can use x-rays to see if your wisdom teeth are trapped under your gum (impacted), which can cause an infection. In some cases, wisdom teeth emerge, but they are angled so the push against your other molars, potentially causing damage to them. Dentists recommend pulling wisdom teeth if they are already causing a problem or are very likely to cause problems in the future. Can dentists pull extra teeth?

Sometimes, you can have too many teeth and they won't fit in your jaw. If this occurs, your teeth become crooked and you need braces to align them. Before you get braces, you'll need a few teeth removed so the remaining teeth have room to move into alignment. What are the tooth removal aftercare instructions?

After getting a tooth pulled, you'll go home biting down on a gauze pad. The bleeding will stop shortly. A small amount of discomfort and swelling are normal. Your dentist will recommend an over-the-counter pain reliever and possibly an ice pack to reduce the swelling. Follow the directions your dentist gives you for the first 24 hours after your extraction. A blood clot will begin to form at the site and certain actions, such as rinsing vigorously, can dislodge it. Eat soft foods for at least a day after the extraction; your dentist will tell you when you can go back to your normal diet.

How soon can I expect my tooth extraction site to heal?

Depending on the location of the tooth, the extraction site should heal in one week to 10 days.
